The Technology and Innovation Office (TIO), formerly the Office of Strategy, Science and Technology, connects New Mexico innovation to the commercial market. TIO strives to lead and execute programs that encourage and enable the startup, growth, and relocation of technology-based industries in and to New Mexico by focusing on growing and diversifying existing technology companies, rapidly commercializing technologies, and promoting research and development in emerging technologies.
New Mexico is home to three national research laboratories, three research universities, business incubators with technology expertise, a business and research and development-friendly tax climate, and multiple funds dedicated to investment in science and technology companies – New Mexico is a rich environment to grow any science and technology business.
The New Mexico Advanced Energy Award (NMAEA) is a competitive state-funded grant that provides non-dilutive funding of up to $1 million to small businesses engaged in research and development or pilot demonstrations focused on advanced energy innovation and commercialization.
The NMAEA will have two award classes:
Research and Development: This award class supports companies engaged in foundational R&D, proof-of-concept, and product development, aiming to translate scientific and technical advancements into tangible, market-ready solutions. Only companies headquartered in New Mexico are eligible for this award class.

Pilot Projects: This award class supports the transition of research into practical, market-ready solutions. Ideal for projects ready to prove their viability, gather critical data, and showcase their impact through pilot demonstrations or initial deployments. Companies headquartered in or outside New Mexico are eligible for this award class.

Prioritizing Investments for Enhanced Competitiveness in Science and Technology
The Technology & Innovation Office, in partnership with TEConomy Partners, has released the New Mexico Science & Technology Roadmap, which identifies the specific technology sectors where New Mexico holds the strongest competition advantages — and outlines how to capitalize on them.
TIO offers competitive non-dilutive grants to support New Mexico small businesses engaged in research and development and commercializing a new technology. Grants focus on technologies in the following sectors: advanced computing (including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and quantum computing), advanced energy, aerospace, bioscience, intelligent manufacturing, and water technologies.
The SBIR/STTR Matching Grant awards non-dilutive funds for business development expenses to selected New Mexico recipients of federal Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer awards.
The Science & Technology Business Startup Grant awards non-dilutive funds for business development expenses to early-stage New Mexico companies commercializing new technology.
The Entrepreneurship Programmatic Support Grant awards non-dilutive funds to proposals that support the operational needs of entrepreneurship-focused organizations, including incubators, accelerators, or venture studios. This funding is designated to help organizations sustain, expand, or establish new programs and services that advance innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology commercialization.
The Innovation Hubs Grant is a competitive state-funded grant that awards non-dilutive funds to proposals for physical infrastructure that support the development, expansion, or improvement of physical spaces or facilities that enable or foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology commercialization.
The Advanced Energy Award gives non-dilutive funds to New Mexico companies developing and commercializing technologies in advanced energy.
The Quantum Technologies Award Pilot Program awards non-dilutive funds to early-stage companies working in quantum technologies that are located in New Mexico or establishing a presence in New Mexico.
The Technology and Innovation Office provides sector-specific business assistance for New Mexico startups in science and technology.
